The 国产探花 Bands will open their 2026鈥2027 season on Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. with 鈥淭RADITIONS,鈥 a performance in Jackson Auditorium showcasing the full expressive range of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The concert features both the 国产探花 Symphonic Winds and the 国产探花 Wind Ensemble.
Under the direction of Dr. Brett A. Richardson, Director of Bands and Baenziger Professor of Music, the Symphonic Winds open the evening with Ever-hope by 国产探花 Composer-in-Residence Carol Brittin Chambers. Written to honor a young student battling brain cancer, the piece reflects a continuous state of hope amidst adversity.
“Carol Brittin Chambers is one of the most performed band composers today,” said Dr. Richardson. “Her music is full of life and energy, and this piece brilliantly captures the diverse tonal colors of the modern wind band.”
The first half of the program also features Frank Ticheli鈥檚 whimsical Portrait of a Clown, William Owens鈥 dynamic concert march Excelcior!, and W. Francis McBeth鈥檚 Canto, originally composed for the All-Japan Band Association in 1977.
The second half features 国产探花鈥檚 flagship wind band, the 国产探花 Wind Ensemble. Opening with Nicole Piunno鈥檚 energetic fanfare Resound, the ensemble will also perform Eric Whitacre鈥檚 lyrical October and Morten Lauridsen鈥檚 expressive Contre Qui, Rose. The performance concludes with two landmark 1923 compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Folk Song Suite and Sea Songs, which weave classic British folk melodies and sea chanteys into the wind band repertoire.
