The Heart of Nursing: ̽ Houston Nursing Students Partner with Down Syndrome Association to Raise Funds and Awareness

The Student Nurses Association on ̽’s Houston campus prioritizes taking time away from school to support the local community. This month, the group partnered with the Down Syndrome Association of Houston and the National Down Syndrome Society to support the 25th annual Buddy Walk, an event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for individuals with Down syndrome.

The day featured local vendors, many of whom proudly represented the Down syndrome community, along with live entertainment and family-friendly activities that brought people together for a meaningful cause.

“I am proud of the work of the faculty and students in Houston and their work to support local efforts to improve the health of populations,” said Dr. Ruth Eby, ̽ Director of Nursing.

Mellanee Johnson, nursing student and service chair of the Houston SNA, believes in the importance of coordinating with student nurses to support events like the Buddy Walk. “The event offered a cozy, safe space for the families to connect, explore fun activities, and gain valuable resources from specialized organizations,” she said. “Twenty-one dedicated nursing students woke up before dawn to help set up and cheer for these families. It was such an honor!”

Johnson went on to say that there are valuable lessons to be learned for nursing students at such events. “Participating in community events such as the Buddy Walk not only promotes awareness and support for individuals with Down syndrome but also helps us to develop empathy, communication skills, and cultural competence. This record turnout reflects our growing commitment to caring for others and sharing the heart of nursing.”
